SPX 2011 and the Future
I’ve been meaning to write and update for a while considering that The Fibonacci Device now has a small following. The book had a good reception at SPX a couple weeks back, more than any other comic I was selling at my table. This has led me to wonder if there might be a larger audience out there if I continued to explore this strange little steampunk world.
However, I haven’t really had a large, coherent narrative in mind for this work. Obviously, there’s a grand story running through the dossiers, but I could never conceptualize a way to show it. What I do see our scenes, episodes, and vignettes with the characters, all of which might add up in time.
So, as a bit of an experiment, I’ll be posting short little stories in the coming weeks and months. Just 2-5 page comics that will hopefully develop and add depth and character to the foundations put in place by the sketchbook. I don’t know if it will work, but it’s worth a shot, I hope.

So, you may be asking yourself what is ‘The Fibonacci Device’? But first, a little background: earlier this year I completed a sketchbook for the Art House Co-op’s Sketchbook Project 2011, which is currently on tour in the U.S. I picked the theme Dirigibles and Submersibles, and fashioned a steampunk-like adventure story using the dossier as a storytelling device. There are 11 total, each chronicling an individual who possesses a mysterious device that can create electricity from the very air itself.
If you aren’t able to see the sketchbook while it is on tour, I’ve made a short run of books that you can purchase. It includes a new version of the text, revised images, and in my opinion looks pretty snazzy. Check it out if you’re interested: Mike Sgier Comics & Illustration - The Fibonacci Device
